IV Sedation Dentistry

A RELAXING ALTERNATIVE FOR YOUR DENTAL ANXIETY

At Birmingham Smiles Dentistry, we are very experienced in dealing with patients who are fearful of dental treatment. Even if you have experienced uncomfortable or painful dental treatment in the past, we can use IV Sedation Dentistry to help you relax and comfortably obtain the treatment you need.

HOW DOES IV SEDATION WORK?

IV sedation is an extremely safe and predictable method of moderate conscious sedation. Through an IV line, sedative medications are administered directly into the bloodstream allowing for quick and effective relaxation. We take every precaution to monitor your progress during the sedation process to add more medication if necessary and keep you safe and comfortable.

Before the doctors begin, they will answer any questions you may have. Once you are sedated, you will be maintained in a comfortable, dazed, painless, relaxed, yet conscious state for the duration of your dental work. When treatment is done, you will wake up a little “dazed” and have little to no memory of the procedure. You will need someone to assist you to and from the office and drive you home.

WHO IS CANDIDATE FOR SEDATION DENTISTRY?

IV Sedation can be an excellent solution for adults who:

  • have high levels of dental fear or anxiety
  • have had traumatic dental experiences
  • have sensitive teeth
  • hate needles, shots, or handpieces
  • hate noises, smells, and tastes associated with dental care
  • have complex dental problems

Before your sedation, you will have a consult appointment with our doctors to review your treatment needs, medical history, and vitals. This appointment is important to make sure you are healthy enough for IV sedation dentistry and answer any questions you may have about the procedure.
